World of Tanks is an online battle simulator involving armored combat between vehicles from World War I, World War II, and the Cold War Era. This game is free to play here, though it does offer several premium services including vehicles, premium account time, and special types of ammunition.
The game plays from a third person view of the vehicle that the player has chosen to drive with an optional sniper mode for aiming over great distances. The game play is smooth, and random battles consist of 10-15 minute matches with three primary scenarios in which players must defeat other players, capture strategic points on small-scale maps, or fight over capture zones. Designs of the tanks were originally based on technical specifications for vehicles, but over time, have been adjusted for more balanced game play while maintaining the basic designs and purposes of the give types of vehicles included in play; light tanks function as scouts and scrappers while medium tanks operate as flankers and brawlers. Heavy tanks rely heavily upon their armor and packing a heavier punch in single shots than medium and light tanks; they also function as the front line fighters. Tank Destroyers rely heavily upon concealment and even heavier firepower than heavy tanks, but in general cannot take as heavy a beating as heavy tanks.
SPG’s (self-propelled guns) act as artillery support, and while they are fragile, they deal heavier damage over much greater distances than any other vehicle and rely upon spotters to provide them with eyes on their targets. The game play is fairly well balanced with each type of tank fulfilling a different role. The several nations included bring vehicles with different strengths and weaknesses, allowing players to use different types of tactics for each vehicle they drive. With a multi-layered tier system, the game takes players from the simplest vehicles in the early tiers to a more complex battle simulation which tops out at Tier 10. Learning how to utilize the strengths and weaknesses of the vehicles the player chooses is essential. Sometimes, winning or losing a battle can come down to simply choosing and using the proper type of ammunition or knowing when not to fire and when to obliterate the opponent with devastating damage. A player’s contribution to a battle while driving a light tank may be as simple as spotting enemy vehicles on the map so that artillery, tank destroyers, and other tanks may address the target as needed without revealing themselves. All in all, World of Tanks presents a dynamic challenge for most gamers who are interested in armored warfare. Team play is essential for victory, and since the game is based on player versus player combat, combat remains dynamic and shifts from battle to battle.
Players will find themselves coming back again and again in this armored warfare simulator, and the competition is fierce. Lock your load, and put on your big boy pants, gents, because when two teams collide in World of Tanks, one must rise, and one must fall.
